Dear Judy,
My best friend was just killed in a car wreck. The car a drunk driver
was driving struck the car my friend and two others were in. It killed
my friend and the drunk man came out unscathed and I’m livid! I’m so
angry at this senseless death. Why didn’t God stop it? Why didn’t that
lousy driver die instead of my good friend?
Dear Angry,
I am so sorry about your friend. I can relate to your question because
four years ago my husband Vic was driving his truck when a drunk driver
hit him. Vic survived, but he suffered serious injuries, especially in
his foot which pains him even today. Our truck was totaled. Like your
friend’s situation, the drunk driver came out of the crash unscathed.
And like you, I too went into the mode of WHY God! Anger arose in both
Vic and me and even now it still tries to lift its ugly head to us.
You ask why God didn’t stop it. This side of heaven some things will
remain a mystery to us. Bad things do happen to good people. But we
cannot blame God for the bad things; it is the fault of humanity who
has gone away from God their Creator.
I do know that God created the earth and all that is within it. He
created humans with a free will. The Bible tells us in Genesis that the
first man and woman made a choice to go against what God told them,
choosing to believe the devil’s lie. From that time on, mankind has
lived in a fallen world. People still prefer to believe the devil’s
lies, rather than God who has our best interest at heart.
It is unfair, but we do not live in a fair world. We live in a world
where people have allowed the devil to rule them and have power over
them.
We are just pilgrims passing through this earth. It is essential to
have a HOPE beyond this world. The Bible speaks of this hope throughout
Scriptures. Christ came to this earth in the person of Jesus to give us
a hope and a future by giving His life for the humanity He created.
John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that He gave His only
begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have
everlasting life.”
Every person needs to know and believe this important truth and repent
of their sin and receive Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord. We
recently celebrated Easter and I like to call it resurrection Sunday
because Christ lives in those who believe in Him. We will spend
eternity with Him. It is important to tell others about this so that
they’ll be ready for whatever comes. They too can be assured they have
a place awaiting them in heaven.
Right now we must not blame God for these accidents, but rather the
evil one and the people’s wrong choices. If I hold anger in my heart
toward another person, the only one it really hurts is me. One day
Jesus is coming back to straighten out all of the mess on the earth,
and this is why we can allow the anger to go from us. “Vengeance is
Mine, I will repay, says the Lord” (Romans13:19). One day we will live
on an earth that is without evil.
Might the Lord comfort you in the loss of your dear friend.
