Dear Judy,
In this special “love month,” I’m feeling more alone than ever. I’m not married, have no man in my life, and I just got laid off my job. It’s really scary because I’m several years from retirement and it will be hard to get another job, especially in this economy. I have no other source of income, no spouse, no kids, and can’t get unemployment since my non-profit doesn’t pay into that. I am a child of God and know in my head that He will care for me no matter what, but my emotions run amuck when I think about the “what ifs.” Do you have any suggestions for me?
- Emotional Basketcase
Dear Basketcase,
Yes, this is the “love month” as some would call it. Often we think of the love couples have for one other, but this leaves out a whole lot of people. Valentine’s Day was instituted by man, not God. As a child of God we should turn February into a month where the focus is on the love God has for people, especially His people. John 3:16 says For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. This shows the enormous love of the creator for His creation and His giving heart to us. This is the right focus of love!
I am not going to downplay what you are feeling because looking at the layoffs and our economy, one could get a bit nervous. Your KEY to all of this is found in your position as a CHILD OF GOD. A child of God has many Scriptures that will help him through the tough times where emotions run amuck. Those “what ifs” really are just that. Most times none of the “what ifs” that keep us from sweet sleep even occur.
You mentioned having no spouse, no kids, and no unemployment benefits. Just because a person has a spouse or children does not guarantee they would have help or support, because not all families are functional. The one guarantee you do have of health and wealth is found in the Lord who loves you. He has given you many words that tell you He is your help in the time of trouble.
Prayer is the wonderful commodity that the Child of God has. I am sure if you look back on previous scary times, you will find that as you sought the Lord, He was there to help you. The wonderful joy of being His child is that we can stand on His promises to us. No matter how it looks or how it feels, the words in Luke 1:37 are true: “For with God nothing will be impossible.” When you wrap your mind around those words, they will calm your emotions and increase your faith and hope in the living God! And you don’t need a spouse, children, or unemployment benefits to do that. Remember, God’s love for you is greater than any of these. Be in peace, and I hope you get a good job soon.
