Dear Judy,
Some people are saying that President Obama's stimulus package isn't going to stave us off from a deep recession. My grandparents often talk about the Great Depression, how they lost their money when the banks "went belly-up" and about standing in long lines for sugar and other staples. I'm afraid we're heading into the same thing. I'm a single mom with three school-age children and it takes every dime I earn to make ends meet. Some of my friends have been laid off, and if that happened to me, I don't know what I'd do. Unlike my grandparents, I don't have any savings. At least my old car's paid off, but what if I couldn't pay my mortgage? I'll admit, I'm afraid.
Dear Afraid,
You are not alone in your emotional misgivings concerning our country. Many people are trusting in President Obama’s stimulus package to bring this country out of this mess. Will it help our country? I don’t know if it will help us economically, but I do know it won’t help the spiritual condition of this country. Our economic mess is caused by the spiritual mess of our country. The only real stimulus package that will turn things around in America is turning back to God.
I too have a mother who went through the depression. They all have stories to tell, but the stories I like best are about the great revivals that were birthed during that depressed time. The revivals went on week after week with people turning back to God by the thousands. Men and women of God stepped out with the healing power of God and miraculous healings swept over the land.
Something great came out of that depressed time and something great will come out of the disaster hitting this country now. For Christians, this is an opportunity to see God move on their behalf. It is time for you to teach your three children who God is. Jesus died on the cross to give us life or salvation. The word salvation in the Bible means deliverance, preservation, soundness, prosperity, happiness, rescue, and general well being. This pretty much covers everything you and your children are going through and will ever go through.
The word depression does not come from God! Fear does not come from God because God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Tim. 1:7). Fear comes from the devil who wants to frighten you with what is going on and all the “what ifs.”
I can’t tell you what the future holds for the people of the world, but for the believer in Jesus Christ, it holds everything that the word salvation means! The people who know, obey, and trust God will have protection and provision. So the long way around your question is to take your eyes off the President or other people and get them clearly focused on the Lord Jesus Christ and everything will be all right with you and your children! And we pray that America will turn back to God.
