Dear Judy
I’m really troubled about the decisions our president is making and the direction he is taking our country. A fellow Christian told me that God put him in office so this is God’s will. I thought we voted him in. I don’t understand all of this. I did vote for him but I did not pray and ask God who to vote for. Now I feel partially responsible for the mess our nation is in. Now what? Big mistake
Dear Big Mistake,
First and foremost, you need to pray for this, and any, president. The Bible says, “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercession, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority” (1 Timothy 2:1,2). This doesn’t say anything about whether or not you like them or whether or not they are doing a good job. This shows us that all humans (and leaders) are valuable to God, and that Christians need to be holding them up before God. We would not be told to do this if the Lord would not intervene in their lives with His direction.
I also have heard people say that God put President Obama in office so this is the will of God. That is not true. God did not put him in office. We, the people, did. If we did not ask God who to vote for, we, like you, made a mistake and need to repent before God.
In years past, the Israelites insisted on a having a king (president to us) over them. You can read about it in 1 Samuel chapter 8. The prophet Samuel warned the people what would happen if they had a king over them, but they refused to listen. So God gave them their king, but this king (King Saul) was not good and the people truly did suffer. King Saul did not obey the Lord but became big in his own eyes.
President Obama, like King Saul, tells the people what they want to hear, and many are following him as if he were God. The people of the USA, like the Israelites of old, cried out for CHANGE and we’re getting it! God would anoint the president if he obeyed God, but I don’t see this happening. The people voted in a man who is not leading the people in the ways of God; rather from the things of God. He is setting in motion godless changes in our country.
All through Scripture you can see where God changed the hearts of the kings, but if they did not change, He removed them. He can do the same thing today, but we need to pray and intercede for this president, crying out to God to reveal Himself and His plans to him. Yes things are a mess, but God is still God and He works in the messes that we humans make!
Whether we voted for this president or not, we are all suffering the consequences. We all need to ask God to work on President Omaha’s heart, for him to humble himself before Almighty God and seek His face. We should all want this president to give his life over to the Lord Jesus Christ, and then to be directed by the Lord. Then the changes we so desperately need in this country will be good ones.
