July 2009 - In God We Trust?

07/01/2009

This is a good time to reflect on why we are a free nation. It’s because of God’s blessing, the commitment of our forefathers, and the sacrifice of our military men and women. Let’s be sure to thank everyone we know who is serving now and previously for their service to keep our country independent and free!

I love the month of July. Here in Wyoming the weather is usually wonderful. The flowers are so colorful, the wildlife plentiful, and the fishing exceptional. We live in a great country! And this month United States citizens around the world will be celebrating our nation’s Independence Day on July 4.

This is a good time to reflect on why we are a free nation. It’s because of God’s blessing, the commitment of our forefathers, and the sacrifice of our military men and women. Let’s be sure to thank everyone we know who is serving now and previously for their service to keep our country independent and free!

We the people of this free independent nation are facing drastic changes in our country and in our individual lives. As my husband and I are traveling across the nation this summer, we are meeting an unprecedented number of people who have been laid off. We also meet people who lost greatly in the stock market and fear losing their homes. The economic downturn is putting great stress on individuals and families. More people are in the unemployment and food stamp lines than since the Great Depression. These are serious times.

What’s the answer? Our currency says IN GOD WE TRUST but this nation has not trusted in God for decades! Sadly, a small but powerful group of people have worked hard to take God out of our public schools, out of Christmas, and out of our government. And they’re doing a pretty good job. We’ve come a long way from being “one nation under God.”

But there is still hope for us as a nation and as individuals. It is found in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” The big question is “IF”—we concerned citizens must turn back to God in prayer for our nation’s leaders, from the White House to our own communities.

Yes, our nation’s forefathers understood the meaning of IN GOD WE TRUST—words found on all our currency. I hope we will all spend time humbling ourselves in prayer seeking the Lord’s face for America and for the people of America! For us to remain an independent nation will depend on our being DEPENDENT on the Lord Jesus Christ; only then can we say IN GOD WE TRUST.

As we celebrate our independence as a nation, let’s remember that, even with all our problems, we still live in the best country on earth! After traveling to other countries, I’m always thankful to step back on U.S. soil! America does have many problems which will never be solved until we turn back to the beliefs of our founding fathers, and that is in the Lord Jesus Christ! Independent from other nations yes, but dependent on God for the strength of the nation!
