Stable Faith?

What do we put our faith in? So many things are happening in the world and even closer to home—in our country, state, community, and in our own lives. No matter where disaster and destruction hits, we are still affected.

Every time we turn on the news it is a wow! As I write this article in California, I’m often reminded of the tragedy to hit our state just over a year ago -- the deadliest wildfire in California history that destroyed much of the town of Paradise and killed 40+ people. People are still trying to pick up the pieces, but reality is that people will never recover all they lost.

We have fires going on right now and just came through that horrible storm that took out so much of the Bahamas before moving to the Carolinas. I know someone who was scheduled for surgery in Savannah, Georgia, but his surgery with hundreds of others had to be canceled because of the storm. In times like these, we have to think about where we place our faith and trust. Can we say with the Psalmist, "Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You…. In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?" (Psalm 56:3-4)

Everything on this earth is temporary. Material possessions rust and decay. People live out their lives assuming there will be a tomorrow, but tomorrows end. The Bible says "even the earth will cease and the heavens will roll up like a scroll" (Revelation 6:14). Most people live like they have forever here on this earth, but it’s simply not true.

We must recalibrate our thinking about who or what we are depending on. Is it our job or ministry? Is it our friends or family? How about our retirement fund? I could go on and on. What if all those things were taken away? Would we still say with the prophet Habakkuk, "Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, and there be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer's feet, and He will make me walk on my high hills." (Habakkuk 3:17-19) No matter what comes my way, I want to have that kind of faith in my God!

We must put our faith in the only One who is truly unending and unshakable. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Amen!

Does it matter which Bible version is used? The New International Version is easier to read than the King James Version, but the Amplified Bible gives better descriptions. Thank you!

Dear Judy, I want to first say, Judy, I love the Lord! But I’m having trouble keeping out thoughts of despair as I watch the news every day. The shooting of innocent people coming out of nowhere. How to cope?

This is the first month in a New Year and I am sure we all made some declaration for this New Year which wholes new beginnings if we will allow them to be. Instead of giving up I always add something to my walk with the Lord and when I do that it seems to take care of what I should give up or change.
