Disgusted?

Dear Judy, Do you remember kindergarten or first grade? I'd venture to guess most of us don't have the best memories of that time. It bothers me when I see so many Christians are acting like they are still in kindergarten. Doesn’t the Bible tell us to grow up? I get so disgusted!

Dear Disgusted,

You are right about many Christians not growing out of the kindergarten stage in their walk with the Lord. This grieves me and I know it grieves our Lord. We are to grow each day in the Lord. So many people get stuck in different phases of their walk with the Lord. At least if a Christian is in the kindergarten stage, they are out of the baby stage!

A kindergarten Christian has several things going for him. He can feed himself, is learning his ABCs, and is often very curious, so if they will use these skills, they will grow beyond this stage. We have to do it for ourself; no one can do it for us. We have to choose to pray, read our Bible and do what it says to do. With you being disgusted with seeing so many Christians not going beyond this point in their walk with the Lord, it should challenge us to keep growing and going forward with our own personal Christian journey.

So instead of being disgusted, I urge you to rise higher by being on your knees crying out to the Lord for His people to grow up! The Psalmist encourages us, “Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry aloud, and He shall hear my voice” (Psalm 55:17). It’s a wonderful promise to know that He hears our voice. It is our duty as Christians to pray for the body of Christ to grow up, keep going forward and be doers of the Word of God. The world is a dark place that needs Christians to bring the light and hope of Jesus Christ to the people of it.

Well, let me start with the most important thing you bring up. I noticed the word I THINK in your question. Just because you go to church does not mean you are a born-again believer.

Everywhere we look, so many people are going through horrible things. Every time I take a hot shower, the Lord brings to my mind how many people have no water at all! Bad weather and fires have destroyed so many lives. People without the Lord have no hope. But those who have received Jesus as their personal Savior and are trusting HIM and His Promises found in their manual for success (the Bible) – they have hope!

Have you ever thought about the word “wilderness” and what that means for the Christian and the non-Christian? To be a Christian we must believe—which is to trust and have confidence that Jesus Christ died on the cross for the sins of the world and rose again! Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

STAY WATCHFUL! I am sure we can all agree, 2025 started off with much tragedy and woe! Terrorist attacks killing many, devastating fires in the LA area, a horrible plane and helicopter collision, and another plane crash two days later! Many families in mourning. Truly, the devil is out to steal, kill, and destroy, and sadly, he’s doing a good job at it. But remember, our Lord is far greater than the devil, and He is ultimately in control.

Christianity 101—Life with God after Salvation We are living in very tough times that are only getting harder. As followers of Jesus, we should be strong in the Lord and full of faith, experiencing the God of the impossible. But are we? Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” I believe Jesus is looking at us and our fellowships and asking if we truly believe this. Are we living this Scripture out to a watching world?
