Wondering

Dear Judy,

I’ve been wondering, is it ok to work on Sunday? I mow my lawn, wash my car, help my kids paint their house, etc., and even do office work sometimes. My Christian friend says I shouldn't do any of that. It's a day the Lord wants us to rest... When else would my lawn get mowed?? Appreciate your thoughts.

Dear Wondering….

I do not see you saying anything about going to church on Sunday, reading your Bible, and prayer! Church service on Sunday is a time we go and bless the Lord with our worship and praise. While we are there, we will be hearing a sermon, reading Scripture, and prayer will go forth. This brings peace and resting to our souls, and feeds our Spirit. Exodus 34:21 says, "Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest."

Rest is about recovery. It is knowing when we are drained, exhausted, and need to breathe deeply for a while. It is us recognizing our limits and how we are handling the demands of our daily life. Rest is about renewal. It is spending time with God so that we are spiritually made new. We must learn to remove things that cause mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical depletion from our life. Many times this is not easy because so many demands take first place in our life. We must be aware that our body and spirit need refreshing and renewing which means spending time with the Lord in His Word and prayer.

If the daily chores or even fun stuff come before going to church on Sunday, then yes, working is wrong. Many people have their job demands on Sunday. We should strive to get Sundays off so we can go to church and fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ. But if that is not possible, then look for an evening or mid-week service. Remember, even Jesus pulled away from the crowd and rested. His rest was spending time with the Father. So make your priority with Jesus first; then mow your lawn. You’ll be happier and healthier for it.

This is not a natural concept but a spiritual one and is only understood from our manual for success, the Bible! To be hidden in Christ, you must be born again or if you prefer, born from above!

We are pilgrims just passing through here to our eternal home, but during this journey we have a purpose and plan from our God to complete. Set before us are many paths with many gates. We choose which ones we open. We are not robots. We have a free will.

We need to be very aware we are living in the last of the last days. All around us we see so much evil. Our manual for success (Bible) is very clear about these days in which we are living. But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come. 2 Timothy 3:1 Perilous times means dangerous and morally corrupt.

This article is titled Food for Thought so why don’t we give some thought to our walk with the Lord as we close this year out. What have we learned from this year? What things do we want to change and not take into the coming year?
