A Merry Heart
I am going to talk about the benefits of a merry heart! We live in very unstable times! Nothing new under the sun so we should not be surprised at what we’re seeing today! Just read the Bible and put yourself where people in those days lived and what they had to overcome! We truly have not come close! Think about the Apostle Paul, beaten and in prison for the gospel’s sake! But, amid it all, Paul tells us to rejoice and be joyful.

Have a merry heart; do not be overcome by the circumstances but see beyond them to the eternal life we have with Jesus today and forever! In the scope of eternity, this life is just a fly speck! So many people all around us need to be saved out of this darkness! We have Jesus to see us through it all, but the unsaved do not live with hope. That should bring us to tears and cause us to get up and get going!
In our manual for success (the Bible), one of the greatest scriptures to meditate on is Zephaniah 3:16: In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: "Do not fear; Zion, let not your hands be weak. The LORD your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing."
Remember, the Bible is both historical and spiritual! In Zephaniah’s time, the people had it tough and the place was full of idols just like now. In that day, when we are born again, we should trust our Lord with the words fear not. He handles our weakness with His strength. Take it personally, He loves us!
Meditate on the Lord telling us He rejoices over us which means He sings and spins about! He sings loudly, triumphantly, because He knows we win and He loves to help us. The creator of all things, including us, holds all together and has a merry heart. Let’s follow His instructions and have a merry heart also, no matter what comes our way, because we belong to Him!
Here are a few Scriptures that show what a merry or rejoicing heart does for us.
Proverbs 15:13 A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance, but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. Notice, it will change our facial look from gloomy to smiling! So all the world can see us shine for Jesus!
Proverbs 15:15 All the days of the afflicted are evil, but he who is of a merry heart has a continual feast. Rejoicing brings us a continual feast of His promises!
Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones. We go to the doctors and many times they give medicine which is not a cure but a band aid until the cure comes. But God’s medicine brings wholeness that comes from a merry heart! This is just the tip of what happens to our bodies when we keep our focus on Jesus and His promises. Trust Him with all things. Let’s get rid of the downtrodden looks! People are watching us. What are we showing them? Trust and believe what our manual for success (the Bible) tells us!
