Afraid One

Dear Judy, I have a feeling I’m missing out on so much in life because my faith to believe for it is weak. Like, if I had the faith to believe God for a good husband, maybe I’d get one?? Is my low-level faith keeping me from that abundant life Jesus promises in John 10:10 . . . or does it depend on me and my ability to believe for it? I’m afraid I’m losing out.

Dear Afraid One,

The Bible is clear about our faith. We all receive the same amount at the new birth! At the time we believe Jesus died on the cross for our sins and we put our trust in this truth, we receive a measure of faith. For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith (Romans 12:3). This verse puts us all on an equal beginning in our walk with God. It does not matter if we are rich or poor, all of us at the point of conversion receive the faith of God.

We then begin to see who we are in Christ and who He is in us. It is no longer I that live but Christ living in me. Scripture clearly states that faith means a firm conviction and confidence in our belief system. We can have faith in many things -- ourselves, others, situations, circumstances or God! The only one who has all the answers is our Lord. Any trust or confidence outside of Him is futile. The Lord spoke clearly to Habakkuk who was asking the Lord some hard questions. The Lord said, Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith (Habakkuk 2:4).

Are you missing out? Well, I do not know the answer to that question. I would say yes to all of us living below what we should have in this life. I do not believe it is that our faith is not strong enough, but that we put limits on a limitless God! How do we increase our faith? So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17) . Keep hearing the Word and do not settle beneath the Word. All things are possible with God. He is the God of the impossible!

Well, let me start with the most important thing you bring up. I noticed the word I THINK in your question. Just because you go to church does not mean you are a born-again believer.

Everywhere we look, so many people are going through horrible things. Every time I take a hot shower, the Lord brings to my mind how many people have no water at all! Bad weather and fires have destroyed so many lives. People without the Lord have no hope. But those who have received Jesus as their personal Savior and are trusting HIM and His Promises found in their manual for success (the Bible) – they have hope!

Have you ever thought about the word “wilderness” and what that means for the Christian and the non-Christian? To be a Christian we must believe—which is to trust and have confidence that Jesus Christ died on the cross for the sins of the world and rose again! Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

STAY WATCHFUL! I am sure we can all agree, 2025 started off with much tragedy and woe! Terrorist attacks killing many, devastating fires in the LA area, a horrible plane and helicopter collision, and another plane crash two days later! Many families in mourning. Truly, the devil is out to steal, kill, and destroy, and sadly, he’s doing a good job at it. But remember, our Lord is far greater than the devil, and He is ultimately in control.

Christianity 101—Life with God after Salvation We are living in very tough times that are only getting harder. As followers of Jesus, we should be strong in the Lord and full of faith, experiencing the God of the impossible. But are we? Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” I believe Jesus is looking at us and our fellowships and asking if we truly believe this. Are we living this Scripture out to a watching world?
