Is Forgiveness Real?

Dear Judy, When I was younger, I had an abortion. I have asked God’s forgiveness, but recently I heard some Christians on social media saying that women who have had abortions are going to hell. Please, help me understand this.

Dear Forgiven,

The very first thing I want to say is I do not do social media…….Some of it is good but wow some of it is ugly and dangerous. The only source of information which will lead me to the truth concerning my life, your life, or anyone’s life is found in the word of God…..THE BIBLE.

Now back to your question. All Christians have a past before Christ and a future with Christ. When I gave my heart to the Lord and said I know I am a sinner, I know that Jesus died on the cross for my sin, I know He rose from the dead, and I know that He ascended back to heaven and is sitting on the right hand of the Father….. I knew I needed forgiveness and I asked and I received….

John 3:16 “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. (NLT)

Micah 7:19 Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean! (NLT)

Acts 13:38-39 “Brothers, listen! We are here to proclaim that through this man Jesus there is forgiveness for your sins. Everyone who believes in him is declared right with God—something the law of Moses could never do. (NLT)

These are just a few scriptures and there are many more. We do not live under the law anymore but under grace. . . by the blood of Jesus which cleanses us from sin (missing the mark) when we ask. Others might not forgive you, you might not forgive yourself, but your Lord forgives you!

Do not allow your past or others to define who you are! Allow your NOW obedience to Christ to define who you are. Your Bible tells you that you are a New Creation in Christ; old things have passed away. . . 2 Corinthians 5:17. So the only truth you shall believe is what the Bible says and certainly not social media.

Well, let me start with the most important thing you bring up. I noticed the word I THINK in your question. Just because you go to church does not mean you are a born-again believer.

Everywhere we look, so many people are going through horrible things. Every time I take a hot shower, the Lord brings to my mind how many people have no water at all! Bad weather and fires have destroyed so many lives. People without the Lord have no hope. But those who have received Jesus as their personal Savior and are trusting HIM and His Promises found in their manual for success (the Bible) – they have hope!

Have you ever thought about the word “wilderness” and what that means for the Christian and the non-Christian? To be a Christian we must believe—which is to trust and have confidence that Jesus Christ died on the cross for the sins of the world and rose again! Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

STAY WATCHFUL! I am sure we can all agree, 2025 started off with much tragedy and woe! Terrorist attacks killing many, devastating fires in the LA area, a horrible plane and helicopter collision, and another plane crash two days later! Many families in mourning. Truly, the devil is out to steal, kill, and destroy, and sadly, he’s doing a good job at it. But remember, our Lord is far greater than the devil, and He is ultimately in control.

Christianity 101—Life with God after Salvation We are living in very tough times that are only getting harder. As followers of Jesus, we should be strong in the Lord and full of faith, experiencing the God of the impossible. But are we? Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” I believe Jesus is looking at us and our fellowships and asking if we truly believe this. Are we living this Scripture out to a watching world?
