Mrs. Newlywed Evangelist

Dear Judy, I am somewhat of a newlywed. I married a traveling evangelist. He's been telling me the do's and don'ts for my behavior when we go to church to worship when he’s not preaching. We don't get ourselves involved with the church, such as attending an activity, or going forward to help when the preacher makes an altar call. He feels we would be robbing the church of the blessing that is meant for them. Is there a code of ethics that I need to learn? Thanks, New Mrs. Rev. Evangelist

Dear New Mrs.,

You sound a little frustrated with all the rules and regulations set by your husband. You did not say what he told you to do during worship.

I am an evangelist and my husband and I have been on the road preaching for almost 25 years, and when I am not preaching we are in a fellowship being taught. As believers, we are called part of the body of Christ. The Apostle Paul said in Romans 12:4-5, “For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.” We are one in Christ with different functions, but no one is greater than the other. We are all to serve the Lord and one another.

My husband and I often are blessed to help during an altar call by praying for those who need prayer. Sometimes we are in the front to receive prayer too! This is called being part of the family of God and enjoying the family.

Is there a code of ethics? Paul says to the Church in Galatia: Galatians 3:1-3 “O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified?... Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? Paul says it is foolish to live by a religious mindset. We are to remember that salvation in Jesus in a free gift, not a set of rules.

It is easy to allow pride to stop us from receiving from the Lord through our brothers and sisters simply because we are preachers. I would say you and your husband need to sit and read what Jesus says about being part of the body of Christ and enjoy your very large family!

This is not a natural concept but a spiritual one and is only understood from our manual for success, the Bible! To be hidden in Christ, you must be born again or if you prefer, born from above!

We are pilgrims just passing through here to our eternal home, but during this journey we have a purpose and plan from our God to complete. Set before us are many paths with many gates. We choose which ones we open. We are not robots. We have a free will.

We need to be very aware we are living in the last of the last days. All around us we see so much evil. Our manual for success (Bible) is very clear about these days in which we are living. But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come. 2 Timothy 3:1 Perilous times means dangerous and morally corrupt.
