Overwhelmed Again!

Dear Judy, I feel so overwhelmed with everything. I read my Bible and pray but I still feel covered with anguish over everything. I have no motivation. How do I get out of this pit I’m in?

Dear Overwhelmed,

I am sorry you are in this pit, but reading your Bible and praying is the right way to get out of it. Overwhelming means shroud or to be covered over, darkness, fainting, feeble! This is a feeling and we cannot go by feelings, but by what the Bible says. Your faith comes from the Bible, not a feeling. We live in this world, but we are not of this world. This is a fallen world so we have to look at everything through the eyes of Jesus and how He would see our situations and circumstances. If we don’t do this, everything will overwhelm us! We will not see properly!

The Psalmist David got overwhelmed and said in Psalm 102:1 “…when he is overwhelmed and pours out his complaint before the LORD. Hear my prayer, O LORD, and let my cry come to You.” So this feeling you are having is certainly not new to God’s people.

When we read the Word, we have to do the Word! The book of James 1:22-23 says, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror.” This means we can read but we have to do something with what we just read or heard.

The root cause of being overwhelmed is anxiety! The Apostle Paul says in Philippians 4:6,7: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

This shows us our part and God’s part. Peace comes after we do our part and do not allow our minds to be anxious no matter what comes our way. We do that by finding the promise attached to the problem and keep speaking it out and thanking God for the answer! You will begin to see that overwhelming feeling leave you and your faith will grow stronger each day. Speak the promise, not the problem!

Well, let me start with the most important thing you bring up. I noticed the word I THINK in your question. Just because you go to church does not mean you are a born-again believer.

Woman covering her eyes

Everywhere we look, so many people are going through horrible things. Every time I take a hot shower, the Lord brings to my mind how many people have no water at all! Bad weather and fires have destroyed so many lives. People without the Lord have no hope. But those who have received Jesus as their personal Savior and are trusting HIM and His Promises found in their manual for success (the Bible) – they have hope!

Have you ever thought about the word “wilderness” and what that means for the Christian and the non-Christian? To be a Christian we must believe—which is to trust and have confidence that Jesus Christ died on the cross for the sins of the world and rose again! Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

STAY WATCHFUL! I am sure we can all agree, 2025 started off with much tragedy and woe! Terrorist attacks killing many, devastating fires in the LA area, a horrible plane and helicopter collision, and another plane crash two days later! Many families in mourning. Truly, the devil is out to steal, kill, and destroy, and sadly, he’s doing a good job at it. But remember, our Lord is far greater than the devil, and He is ultimately in control.

Christianity 101—Life with God after Salvation We are living in very tough times that are only getting harder. As followers of Jesus, we should be strong in the Lord and full of faith, experiencing the God of the impossible. But are we? Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” I believe Jesus is looking at us and our fellowships and asking if we truly believe this. Are we living this Scripture out to a watching world?
