What does it mean to have faith?

March 2025

Dear Judy

What does it mean to have faith?

Dear Wondering One,

What does it mean to have faith is a great question and means different things for different people. Faith means to have confidence and trust in something or someone. Before I was saved or a follower of Christ, I had faith in drugs and alcohol, that they would take away all my problems. Of course, they did not. I just got addicted to them and they caused depression to increase. So, to a non-believer, their trust and confidence are in worldly things.

Even for Christians, faith is something that must be developed. It can and should grow! When saved we all start out with the same amount of faith, but as we read the Bible (manual for success), our faith will grow. Our faith or confidence and trust in Jesus Christ and His promises grow. We learn not to rely on what we see but to rely on our faith which is believing, trusting and confidence.

Habakkuk 2:4 …. But the just shall live by his faith.

Romans 1:17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just shall live by faith."

Every morning, we wake up with decisions to make. Do we have faith in the reports of the world, or do we have faith in what the Word of God says? That is a choice we can make. But, sad to say, the non-Christian does not have that choice, because if no belief in Christ, no promises to stand on! Our trust, confidence, and believing which is faith goes beyond today, but all the way to heaven where we know our eternal blessed journey continues. That is faith!

Philippians 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

Well, let me start with the most important thing you bring up. I noticed the word I THINK in your question. Just because you go to church does not mean you are a born-again believer.

I know I am supposed to be joyful this time of the year, but I am not! It all seems so plastic and empty to me, even in the church! Feeling Pretty Empty

Everywhere we look, so many people are going through horrible things. Every time I take a hot shower, the Lord brings to my mind how many people have no water at all! Bad weather and fires have destroyed so many lives. People without the Lord have no hope. But those who have received Jesus as their personal Savior and are trusting HIM and His Promises found in their manual for success (the Bible) – they have hope!

Have you ever thought about the word “wilderness” and what that means for the Christian and the non-Christian? To be a Christian we must believe—which is to trust and have confidence that Jesus Christ died on the cross for the sins of the world and rose again! Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

STAY WATCHFUL! I am sure we can all agree, 2025 started off with much tragedy and woe! Terrorist attacks killing many, devastating fires in the LA area, a horrible plane and helicopter collision, and another plane crash two days later! Many families in mourning. Truly, the devil is out to steal, kill, and destroy, and sadly, he’s doing a good job at it. But remember, our Lord is far greater than the devil, and He is ultimately in control.

Christianity 101—Life with God after Salvation We are living in very tough times that are only getting harder. As followers of Jesus, we should be strong in the Lord and full of faith, experiencing the God of the impossible. But are we? Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” I believe Jesus is looking at us and our fellowships and asking if we truly believe this. Are we living this Scripture out to a watching world?
